Chocolate for breakfast!? Have we died and gone to heaven!?
When we’d met friends in Utrecht, one of the foods they suggested we sample while in the Netherlands is hagelslag. Unbeknownst to them, Brian was familiar with this meal (he had a childhood friend whose mother was from the Netherlands and, after returning from family visits, she’d prepare this for the boys having brought hagelslag back to the USA) and we’d already acquired the makings for it. This is a breakfast meal consisting of bread, butter, and hagelslag. Hagelslag translates to sprinkles. Hagelslag are available in a variety of flavors such as chocolate, fruit, or licorice and are available in a variety of shapes and colors such as flakes, and pink/white balls. We’d selected puur chocoladehagel (dark chocolate sprinkles). To prepare: toast the bread, then add generous amounts of butter and hagelslag. Yummy!
