Arrival of Twins

Urzelina, the town neighboring Velas along the south coast of Sao Jorge, had an energetic buzz in anticipation for the arrival of a new boat!  We were also excited because our friend, Bill (s/y Calico Skies), was delivering this new boat from Portugal.  We hadn’t seen Bill for over a year, since our shenanigans in the Caribbean together, and we were looking forward to a reunion.

Bill found his way to Detour and introduced us to Filipe, the proud new owner of s/y Twins (49′ Jenneau).  We had just enough time for one, cold beer with Bill before being whisked away by Filipe to celebrate the successful delivery of s/y Twins (Bill had sailed for 6-days with Filipe’s father).  Brian and I were astounded by the hospitality of Filipe and his family.  Filipe brought us to Urzelina where we had a brief tour of the small town, then took a ride aboard s/y Twins to bring the boat into the harbor at Velas.  Later, Filipe brought us to his parents’ home, and gave us a tour of his adjacent property where he has built 10 rental bungalows neatly nestled amidst a revived vineyard.

Filipe’s bungalows are modern, bright, comfortable, and airy; large windows and a deck extend the small space into the surrounding landscape.  Each bungalow has a fantastic ocean view overlooking the island of Pico, and each bungalow is positioned so that guests have privacy.  The name, Intact Bungalows, represents Filipe’s goal to showcase Sao Jorge’s natural beauty while keeping the island’s ecosystem preserved.

We admired the sunset from Filipe’s favorite viewpoint, and headed back to his parents’ home for a boisterous meal.

  1. Hi Jody! Slowly making our way toward the Pacific… really loving the Azores though, it will be tough to leave! Happy sailing to you, and find all the best places for us 🙂
