Sao Jorge had quickly become our home away from home. Bill (s/v Calico Skies) stayed for an entire week before returning to his wife and boat in Lisbon, and together we visited Sao Jorge’s highlights. Between excursions, we enjoyed the company of Filipe and his extended family. Around the harbor and downtown in Velas, we were often saying “Bom Dia!” or “Boa Tarde!” to familiar faces. There was always something happening!
Back out to Faja da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, we spent the weekend to experience the Festival of Santo Cristo.
The lighthouse and whale watching tower at Ponta dos Rosais on the northwest end of Sao Jorge.
The Ponta do Topo lighthouse at the southeast end of Sao Jorge, and nearby Ilheu do Topo (apparently the cows swim out to this island).
Pico da Esperanca (1053m – 3454ft) is the highest point on Sao Jorge.
A short hike outside of Velas found us peering down at the town’s sporting complex from the top of Morro Grande.
We weren’t quite finished with Sao Jorge, but departure time was fast approaching.
