We just couldn’t get enough of the Guadiana! We set out for a dinghy exploration even farther upstream; the river continues for many miles beyond a dam at Mertola, far into the Paque Natural do Vale do Guadiana.
Silent. Wilderness. Aside from the occasional skiff secured along a shoreline, and a few floats indicating fishing nets or traps, there was no sign of humanity.
Through a rocky gorge, the fog began to lift and brilliant colors gleamed from the smooth rock surfaces.
At the second dam, we turned around and headed back slowly beneath the sunshine. We spotted many animals; one polecat, rabbits, red legged partridges, sheep & goats, a few jumpy fish, and crayfish.
